VILLAGE HOUSES

Poor housing in the local villages is a massive problem and one that is hard to resolve because of the spiralling cost of building materials.

In the sunshine, the huts with their leaf roofs and outdoor fires, the saris drying on the bushes, and the toddlers chasing chickens appear charming. In heavy rain, people disappear inside their houses and huddle under blankets. They put out pans to catch the drips from their leaking roofs, tie lengths of plastic to the roofs and shore up the crumbling walls of their houses with corrugated iron sheets. Life during the monsoon season can be miserable for the poorest of the poor.

The monsoon rain caused havoc to some of the mud-walled houses in the villages. Some of the community sponsorship money has been used to subsidise the construction for a poor family called Chinnakannu whose house collapsed during the rains. The villagers are providing some of the labour and the family is contributing what they can.
