VILLAGE FAMILIES

The area around Kanji is a poor rural drought-ridden part of south India with no industry, poor soil and little employment. Many of the people in the villages come from the lowest caste system in India called ‘Dalits’; they used to be called ‘untouchables’.

The Indian government is introducing measures to improve the standard of living, but many of the poorest of the poor, especially those living in remote rural areas, continue to live a desperately hard life. For this reason the charity supports some of the poorest families and widows.

The charity ensures that via the community sponsorship program village families have enough to eat and that educational expenses for children within the family that attend government schools are met – uniform, books etc. Any money left over is put into a community fund that is used in a variety of ways e.g. to provide food for the elderly, to finance after-school classes for children struggling to keep up at government schools, or to improve the village water supply.
