SCHOOL
In 1993, St Antony's School started in a thatched hut that was also the children's home by night. The new school building was started in 1994. It has expanded until now there is a kindergarten for around 250 children and the main school with 560 children up to age 16. Children come from twenty-five poor villages in the area surrounding Kanji, some more than 20 km away. Many arrive on one of the three school buses that travel to and from the villages each day.
Most of the children's parents are uneducated and in labouring jobs. They usually make a small contribution to the cost of their child's education, which encourages them to send them to school every day. The poorest children are educated free.
The school has a library, science laboratory, computer centre and a hostel. The school is still in need of many resources to assist the children in their education.
The school is open to children of all religions and castes and provides a mainstream education in English.
